About this roundup
Purpose
A weekly curated digest that connects major global environmental developments with conditions in Hawaiʻi and the wider Pacific, using the Planetary Boundaries framework and the Doughnut Economics model. Published every Wednesday morning. Every edition aims for an approximately even split between global updates and Hawaiʻi–Pacific updates, overall and within each section.
Sections
Twelve fixed sections — the nine planetary boundaries (climate change; biosphere integrity; land-system change; freshwater change; biogeochemical flows; ocean acidification; stratospheric ozone depletion; atmospheric aerosol loading; and novel entities such as plastics and toxic chemicals), plus Doughnut Economics & Social Foundations, Indigenous Knowledge & Stewardship, and Global Governance, Collective Action & Multipolar Traps. Each section is presented as a Global subsection and a Hawaiʻi–Pacific subsection. A boundary with no substantive news in a given week is simply left out rather than padded.
What counts
Substantive developments — reporting, peer-reviewed research, government data, environmental indicators, Indigenous and community-based knowledge, emerging risks, policy changes, restoration efforts, and practical solutions or innovations — that are primarily about one of the boundaries, the Doughnut social foundation, Indigenous environmental stewardship, or environmental governance. A passing one-line mention in a broader story does not qualify. Particular attention to Pacific priorities: extreme heat, marine heatwaves, drought, changing rainfall, aquifer recharge, flooding, erosion, sea-level rise, groundwater inundation, wildfire, tropical cyclones, coral reefs, fisheries, invasive species, food systems, public health, and forest and watershed restoration.
Per-article detail
Each entry carries a plain-language summary, the geographic location, the publication date and (where stated) the date of the reported event or finding, the relevant planetary boundary, any applicable Doughnut social dimension, an evidence-strength label, a short "why it matters" note, and — for global items — an implication for Hawaiʻi and Pacific communities.
Selection criteria
Only substantive articles published in the previous seven days by the original publisher. Primary and authoritative sources are prioritized; new evidence is distinguished from opinion; uncertainty and contested claims are flagged; duplicate coverage is removed. Never events listings, pure opinion with no news hook, press releases dressed as news, content farms, or aggregator reposts. Every summary links to exactly one original source, once.
Curation disclosure
Summaries here are curated and written by this publication; they are not the original reporting. Indigenous knowledge is attributed to the community or knowledge holders who shared it, and is kept distinct from outside academic or journalistic interpretation. Each entry links directly to the original publisher's article — read the full story there.
